Is Survival Selfish?
Do you believe people must be selfish in order to survive? This is the central question of this essay. Survival does not require people to behave selfishly because caring for others gives people purpose and people need a reason to survive. The key to survival is having purpose in a crisis this is often thinking of others and the loss, they would suffer were they to die. Most survival stories prove that. If people do not have a reason to live, they are often frozen during survival situations, and they die. People who survive often say that they did so for someone else. Because people need a reason to survive; if people don’t have to a reason to fight, they will simply give up. When Ronald De Francesco survived the World Trade Center attack, he says it was the thought of his family that saved his life. The key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; caring for others gives people purpose. The best search and rescue professionals are people who have survived in a crisis. Doctors and nurses have higher rates of survival then others because they have a purpose. This is not selfish because they are surviving to help someone else. Thinking of others makes these people safer in a crisis. Although survival is clearly not selfish, there are these who disagree.
Some people argue that people shouldn’t assume they are capable of saving others; it could cost them their lives. This is wrong because helping other people keeps people calm in a crisis. The key to survival is having purpose in a crisis; caring for other others gives people purpose and people need a reason to survive. Doctors and nurses are the perfect example of this. Clearly, survival doesn’t have to be selfish.
